Gestation plus weaning of thirty months across 46:15, 31:14, and 2:233

Tier 2 · Interpretive Sign / Miracle

This entry examines an arithmetic drawn from three verses, Surah al-Ahqaf 46:15, Luqman 31:14 and al-Baqarah 2:233, in which gestation plus weaning is given as thirty months and full weaning as two years, yielding by subtraction a minimum gestation of six months.

The source text

“And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months.”

Qur'an 46:15 · Saheeh International

“And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.”

Qur'an 31:14 · Saheeh International

“Mothers may breastfeed their children two complete years for whoever wishes to complete the nursing [period].”

Qur'an 2:233 · Saheeh International

What was understood in the seventh century

In the seventh century the durations of pregnancy and nursing were known approximately from experience, and two years of nursing was a customary and widely observed norm. There was, however, no framework linking a minimum viable gestation to the total of gestation-plus-weaning, and no data on how early a pregnancy could end with a surviving child.

The three verses address parental duty and the nursing period rather than embryology. Surah al-Ahqaf 46:15 gives 'his gestation and weaning is thirty months'; Surah Luqman 31:14 and Surah al-Baqarah 2:233 give full weaning as two complete years. Classical scholars, reportedly including Ibn Abbas and later Ali, set these figures side by side and derived that the minimum gestation is thirty months minus twenty-four, that is, six months, using the verses' internal arithmetic to reach a number none of them states outright.

The modern correspondence

Modern neonatology places the threshold of extrauterine viability near six months, about twenty-four weeks, with the earliest survivors clustering close to this boundary. In earlier eras, without incubators or intensive support, the effective margin would have been narrower still, so a six-month figure sits close to the practical lower limit of a pregnancy that could yield a living child.

Commentators highlight the internal arithmetic consistency of the verses and its match to this lower limit of viable pregnancy. The correspondence argued here is between a figure obtained by subtraction from the text, six months, and a boundary confirmed only by modern medicine. The World Health Organization materials on breastfeeding and on preterm birth, cited below, provide the two-year nursing norm and the limits-of-viability data that the reading invokes. Supporters find the interest of the case less in any single figure than in the consistency between the verses: the same two-year weaning appears in two places, the combined thirty-month total in a third, and the subtraction that follows is simple and unforced. That the residual figure of six months should land near the modern threshold of survival, rather than at some biologically impossible value, is what they present as noteworthy, while conceding that the text was not written as a treatise on gestation.

Considerations and counterpoints

Skeptics argue that the verses address parental duties and legal nursing periods, not embryology, and that 'thirty months' and 'two years' are round, customary figures rather than precise measurements. The six-month minimum is an inference by later exegetes rather than a stated claim of the text, and a normal full-term pregnancy is about nine months, so the verses do not give a gestation length directly. On this view the arithmetic is real but incidental, and its match to the viability threshold is read back into figures chosen for legal and moral, not medical, reasons. They stress that the derivation depends on treating the two-year weaning as an exact maximum to be subtracted, whereas 2:233 frames it as an option 'for whoever wishes to complete the nursing,' not a fixed constant, which weakens the claim that the text encodes a precise minimum gestation. The convergence with modern viability figures, critics conclude, is striking only if one first grants the exegetes' arithmetic and then rounds the medical threshold to meet it.

Credibility rating: Tier 2 · Interpretive — The 30-minus-24-equals-6-months arithmetic is textually clean and matches the modern viability threshold, though the six-month figure is a scholarly inference, not stated outright.
