What was understood in the seventh century

The word lawaqih carries the sense of impregnating or fertilizing. Pre-Islamic Arabs were aware that wind carried date-palm pollen and could assist the pollination of crops, and they practised the manual pollination of date palms, transferring pollen from male to female trees by hand. Wind and fertility were thus already linked in agricultural experience.

The verse's primary classical reading connects the winds to rain-bearing clouds, treating fertilization as an image for the winds that make the sky yield water; the following clause speaks directly of water "sent down from the sky" and given for drink. Whether the fertilizing is read as botanical or as meteorological, the detailed mechanisms were unknown. The workings of pollination at the level of pollen and ovule, and the physics by which winds gather moisture and build rain clouds, were both wholly beyond the period's understanding, which grasped the outcome without any account of the cause.

The modern correspondence

Modern botany documents anemophily, or wind pollination, whereby wind transports pollen between plants. It is a major reproductive pathway for grasses, many trees and cereal crops, and for the date palm itself, whose pollination the Arabs assisted by hand. The wind is, in a literal sense, an agent of fertilization across large parts of the plant world, and wind-pollinated species release pollen in great quantity precisely because the air is an untargeted carrier. That the wind should "fertilize" is, in this light, a plain botanical fact rather than only a figure of speech.

Atmospheric science, in parallel, shows that winds drive the convergence and lifting of moist air that build rain clouds, and carry the fine particles around which water droplets can condense. In both readings the wind is a bringer of increase: in one it carries the pollen that lets plants set seed, in the other it gathers the moisture that becomes rain.

Commentators connect "fertilizing winds" to both of these, the wind pollination of plants and the role of winds in cloud formation and precipitation, noting that the verse pairs the winds directly with the sending down of water and the giving of drink. The word lawaqih, plural of a form meaning "impregnating," is read as apt to either sense. The references below set out wind pollination as a botanical process. Considerations and counterpoints

Critics note that Arabs already knew wind spread date-palm pollen, so "fertilizing winds" reflects existing agricultural knowledge rather than a disclosure, and that most classical exegetes read lawaqih as winds that impregnate clouds with rain, not as botanical pollination. On this reading the modern botanical gloss is a later addition, not the verse's plain intent, which is bound up with the sending of water in the same sentence. The tier assigned here reflects that wind-borne pollination of date palms was already known and that the fertilization image is at least partly figurative.
