The heavens and earth as 'a joined entity, then We separated them' and Surah al-Anbiya 21:30

Tier 2 · Interpretive Sign / Miracle
Vast nebula of glowing gas splitting into two luminous regions against deep space, seen in muted warm and teal tones.

This entry examines Surah al-Anbiya 21:30, which describes the heavens and the earth as “a joined entity” that God then separated, and the argument that this image parallels the common origin of the universe described by modern cosmology.

The source text

“Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and then We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe?”

Qur'an 21:30 · Saheeh International

What was understood in the seventh century

Creation accounts circulating in the seventh century typically described the heavens and earth as distinct creations from the start, or as separated by gods from a primordial substance in frankly mythological terms — the Babylonian Enuma Elish and the Egyptian separation of sky and earth deities are the familiar examples. The dominant Greek view, by contrast, held the heavens to be eternal and unoriginated, so that the question of a beginning did not arise at all.

Nothing in Arabian oral tradition, nor in the learned cosmology available to the contemporaries of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), described a common, unified origin of all cosmic matter in the sense later established by physical cosmology. The verse's rhetorical frame is also notable: it is addressed to “those who disbelieved,” as though the joined origin were something they ought to consider.

The modern correspondence

Modern cosmology holds that the observable universe evolved from an extremely hot, dense early state in which all matter and energy were together, subsequently expanding and differentiating over about 13.8 billion years. The framework developed from Lemaître's 1931 “primeval atom” hypothesis and was decisively confirmed by Penzias and Wilson's 1965 detection of the cosmic microwave background; NASA's overview of the Big Bang model summarizes the evidence. The microwave background is the cooled afterglow of the early hot phase, and its detection converted the model from one hypothesis among several into standard cosmology.

Commentators have argued that the verse's image of the heavens and earth as one joined entity (ratq) that was then split apart (fataqnahuma) parallels this common origin of everything we now call sky and earth. The verse's continuation — that every living thing was made from water — is also frequently cited alongside the water-dependence of all known life.

Considerations and counterpoints

The counterarguments deserve full weight. Early commentators, including reports from Ibn Abbas, understood the joining and splitting quite differently: the sky was closed and then opened with rain, and the earth was closed and then split with vegetation — a reading supported by the verse's immediate turn to water and life. Critics also note that separation-of-sky-and-earth motifs are common in ancient Near Eastern cosmogonies, so the verse can be read as inheriting a familiar literary theme rather than anticipating Big Bang cosmology. Finally, in the modern account the earth did not exist at the initial state to be “separated” from anything; the correspondence argued here is therefore broad rather than exact.

The disagreement, in the end, concerns how much precision the language of a seventh-century audience should be expected to bear: proponents read 'the heavens and the earth' as a totality whose stuff was once one, while critics insist the verse be read as its first hearers and earliest commentators read it. That unresolved question is why this entry is rated interpretive rather than strong.

Credibility rating: Tier 2 · Interpretive — Authentic text with a striking surface parallel to a well-documented discovery, but the parallel is broad and classical exegesis read the verse very differently.
